Becoming Community Manager
Brewess Development Blog #2
Good day to you, esteemed blog reader! I hope you are having a fruitful day?
My name is Georgie Peck, the Content & Community Manager at indie-games company, Fairer Games. I am delighted to be writing this blog post on how I got involved in the company, and my experience so far as a noob in the industry!

In case you are still unaware of our game, let me just give a brief summary of Brewess. Brewess is a narrative adventure game about crafting ales and building friendships in Early Modern East Anglia. The region is plagued with power struggles that you must navigate as a brewer, using your dry wit and natural charm to keep your business open and your purses full.
It honestly still has not sunk in that I am actually working for a games company…
My whole personal life revolves around playing games of all different genres, and looking for my next favourite adventure, story or mission to get whisked away in. Deep down I have always loved the idea of working in the games industry, and I suppose when I was younger, I did not think this would be an option, not for a girl anyway. I always felt I had to hide my abundant passion for video games around people, in order to not be mocked by others. There are still people in my life now that think gaming is just for boys living in their mother’s basements, but I am so ecstatic that nowadays, this is becoming a lot less of a stereotype, and more acceptable to love gaming, and the industry, no matter your gender, age, or race.
Now I am literally working for a games company who have just been showcased as one of London Games Festival’s Historical Adventure feature, and now, we have our very own, live Steam store page! (Young Georgie would never have believed she could be a part of this.) As you can probably guess, everyone on our small team is very excited about this! I owe my thanks to Robin Milton, friend, mentor, and founder of Fairer Games, who trusted this excitable gaming geek to be let loose, and run on social media with a variety of content, helping to build the Fairer Games community. I feel so at home with this small family of creatives, made up of mostly neurodivergent and queer individuals like myself, with similar, if not the same, passions as me.
It was actually my fiancee who informed me that Robin had started her own gaming company and was looking to make her very own game. With this information, I immediately messaged Robin and tried to sell her my soul so that I could have some involvement with her upcoming project. I was incredibly, pleasantly surprised when she agreed to hire me just from my passionate ramblings about wanting to get into the gaming industry.
I have done some very minor social media managing in the past voluntarily, but to be offered the chance to try out Community and Content managing officially for a small, indie games company, has just been the perfect step for me, in both my professional and personal life, and after doing a lot of research into what it takes to be a Community Manager, and what the role entails, it is definitely something I can see myself changing my career for and pursuing, in order to get into my dream job industry.
I would like to take a moment to thank Victoria Tran, the current community manager for Innersloth, the indie games company that work on Among Us, and The Henry Stickmin Collection. I emailed Victoria pretty much as soon as Robin had given me my job role, and I was like, “Gaaah, where do I even begin?!” Victoria gave me some great advice about giving myself room to fail and learning from it, as well as experimenting with a variety of ways to produce content and attract a community for our games company, and our game, Brewess.

I absolutely love being Content and Community Manager for Fairer Games; It can be tricky, juggling the want to work on Fairer Games content, whilst working a full-time job in a local college, and as a video editor, I would love to be a lot more creative in what I produce for our social media if I had more time to concentrate solely on being a Community Manager. I am very lucky and beyond grateful to be working for Robin who has been absolutely phenomenal in making sure that we are all doing okay, and not overworking ourselves, checking in to make sure we are up to date with everything exciting that we have going on. I am so proud of us all! Our team works flexibly with one another, and we are all spread out living in the UK, from Essex, (Woo!) to Yorkshire, London and of course, Norwich. I cannot wait to hopefully meet up with everyone soon, and deliver more great content on our socials, continuing to build a diverse, like-minded, cosy, friendly, and safe community for all of you.
Cheers!
